The collection, which was originally founded as «Collection for Ethnology», was opened to the public for the first time in 1889. Since the establishment of the ethnographic museum in 1972, it has held special exhibitions on diverse ethnological topics, enriched by an accompanying educational and cultural programme.
The museum is a university institution as well as a public museum, and is committed to engaging with a wide audience. Its core duties are collecting, preserving, researching and mediating.
Cooperation with external partners such as other museums, cultural and technical experts, and stakeholders connected to the regions of provenance of the collections, is a necessity for all museum projects.
